Senegal: Woman Sets Former Partner’s Apartment Ablaze in Alleged Jealous Rage

A young woman in Dakar has been arrested after allegedly setting fire to her former partner’s studio apartment, reportedly driven by jealousy over his new relationship. The incident occurred in the Grand Yoff district, according to local media reports.

The events unfolded on April 29, 2026, at around 3 p.m., when the victim reported to the police that his residence, located in the Arafat neighborhood, had caught fire. Upon arrival, authorities found that the blaze had started on the first floor of a two-story residential building housing several families. Quick action by nearby residents helped contain the flames before they could spread further.

Police in Grand Yoff later detained a female suspect on multiple charges, including arson, destruction of property, endangering lives, and unlawful entry. Investigators noted extensive damage at the scene, with furniture destroyed, household appliances burned beyond repair, and the electrical system severely affected.

Witness accounts pointing to a woman seen leaving the premises under suspicious circumstances guided the investigation. Surveillance footage from a nearby establishment enabled authorities to identify the suspect, who was subsequently recognized by the victim as his former partner.

She was located and arrested the following day in the Parcelles Assainies area. After initially denying involvement, she reportedly confessed when confronted with evidence. According to her statement, feelings of humiliation following their breakup and the sight of her ex-partner with a new companion led her to act.

She admitted to entering the apartment using a spare key she had kept after their separation, setting the fire deliberately, and then fleeing the scene.
