Syria Calls for Global Response to Israeli Strikes, Seeks Renewed 1974 Agreement

Ahmad al-Sharaa, the President of Syria, has urged the international community to take decisive responsibility in addressing what he described as ongoing Israeli attacks, including those targeting Syrian territory.

Speaking at a press conference following an informal meeting with European officials in the Greek Cypriot Administration, al-Sharaa called for a return to the 1974 disengagement agreement, which established a ceasefire framework between Syria and Israel. He stressed that the global community must act to halt what he characterized as repeated violations affecting Syrian land.

The Syrian leader linked his country’s stability to broader regional and European security, emphasizing that cooperation between Damascus and Europe is increasingly necessary in light of mounting geopolitical and economic pressures. According to al-Sharaa, mutual reliance between Europe and Syria is unavoidable, particularly when it comes to ensuring security and maintaining global supply chains.

He further argued that stronger European commitment to Syria’s stability would play a key role in curbing Israeli actions and safeguarding Syrian sovereignty. Highlighting diplomatic progress, al-Sharaa described the recent discussions with European representatives as a constructive first step, paving the way for a high-level dialogue scheduled for next month. This upcoming engagement, he said, is expected to advance Syria’s strategic integration with Europe and enhance wider regional cooperation.
